Ball Machine Settings & Drills for Every Level
A ball machine is the most honest training partner – if you feed it right. Concrete settings and drills for beginners, intermediates and competitors.

A ball machine plays every ball identically. That's exactly its value – and its trap. Set it up wrong and you'll perfectly train the wrong things: flat balls from half height at a tempo that never happens on court. Here's how to get the maximum out of it.
Understand the three basic settings
Speed: Start 20 percent below your comfort level. Many players set the machine too fast and compensate with panic technique. Cleanliness before pace.
Frequency: 2 to 3 seconds between balls for technique drills, 1.5 seconds for conditioning. Whatever recovery you don't need between balls, use to recover to your base position.
Oscillation: Switch it on only once the shot from the middle is solid. Horizontal oscillation trains footwork and positioning – but it forgives sloppy technique never.
Drills by level
Beginner – "Four corners of the middle": Machine aimed at the center T-line, low speed. 10 forehands, 10 backhands from the middle, focus on early preparation and a controlled swing. Goal: 8 of 10 balls into the opponent's service box.

Competitor – "Attack and defend": Machine with topspin and variation: one short ball, one deep. Attack the short one (approach or winner attempt), neutralize the deep one. That's the most common match situation of all – and it's almost never trained.
The most important drill: the pause
After every basket (80–120 balls), two real minutes off. Not your phone – a quick debrief: what worked, what didn't? The machine doesn't judge, but it doesn't remember either. Remembering is your job.
MatchGrit's live coaching walks you through exactly these machine sessions via headphones: drill calls, target zones, tempo – the coach on court without anyone standing next to you.
